Spring Performances on the Way!

Students attending Drama Kids Classes are preparing to show off what they have learned this past year in our spring performances. Our performances will be held at the Howard County Center of the Arts on May 15th. They will be presenting three different plays. A play called "Storyland," which takes place in a magical land. A play called "A Slice of Life,"which takes place in a park, and lastly, a play called "The Kidnapping of Kitty O'hara," that takes place in the roaring 20s. We are very proud of our students and we cant wait to see what they have prepared for us! It will be quite a show!

I had the pleasure of visiting our Combination Class at Mt. Hebron Presbyterian Church this past Saturday. What an amazing group of children! I thoroughly enjoyed watching them learn and perform. We were at Back-To-School Night at Elkridge Landing Middle School this evening and it was absolutely AWESOME! We met so many parents and prospective DRAMA KIDS. We were able to "spread the word" about our incredible program and enrolledt several new students. DKI Acting Academy for Teens

Our dynamic ACTING ACADEMY is open to all students attending middle school and high school. It attracts a wide range of young people, from those seeking to increase their confidence and speaking ability, to those hoping to pursue a career in theatre and media. The theatre arts program encompasses a five year cycle of curriculum providing young actors with a great diversity of material. As with the classes for 5 – 11 year olds, the developmental side of the program is still important, encouraging students to become confident, articulate communicators. However, the theatre arts side of the program in the ACTING ACADEMY is very comprehensive, covering spontaneous improvisation, voice production, small-group improvisation, mini-scripts, character analysis, open-ended dialogues, theatre games, radio plays, quick-fire dialogues, monologues and structured scenes. In the final term of each year, students begin work on a scripted production which is performed for a public audience. This is always a highlight of the year and reflects the talents and skills of students and their teachers. Last but not least, many lasting friendships are made through attending the ACTING ACADEMY.

In some parts of the world, such as Australia, where the program first began in 1979, former students are now enrolling their own children so that they too can experience the vibrance, nurturing and personal growth that Drama Kids brings to all students. This is a great compliment to the power of the program!

We are proud to have founded the world’s biggest provider of developmental drama classes in the world. Is this the reason why students love classes? Of course not! They love classes because at every studio, worldwide, the teacher makes each student feel welcome and valued. On the first day of attendance a new student is warmly welcomed and then introduced to a student whose task it is to be their special friend and ease the transition into class. During his exciting career, he has directed drama productions and musicals, as well as acting in various stage productions. He is an award winning producer of a children's drama radio show. Chris has a passion for theatre and for working with children -- focusing on their development and advancement in the fields of drama and theatre. Chris will be teaching our classes at Grace Episcopal Church in Elkridge, St. John's Parish Day School in Ellicott City, Beth Israel Congregation in Owings Mills, and Veterans Elementary School in Ellicott City. He is an amazing, dynamic individual and we are thrilled to have him on board with us this year.

Yesterday was the last day of summer camps! Like I said before, I really am going to miss the 19 bright and cheerful smiles that I saw each and every day throughout this week! We had so much fun together. I want to congratulate all the students for doing a fabulous job at there performance yesterday. They really stole the show! I look forward to seeing all of there smiles again in our regular Drama Kids classes. Again, congratulations students, and have a wonderful rest of the summer!

Well, our last day of summer camp is tomorrow and I'm going to miss all of the smiling faces and the "dramatic fun" we've had during our 3 weeks of camp. Drama Kids Summer Camp has new and exciting drama activities each day for non-stop fun. Learn acting skills and star in a special end-of-camp performance. Join us for a dramatically fun summer!

DKI SUMMER CAMP -- AUGUST 3 - AUGUST 7 -- for ages 5 - 13. The camp theme is "ONCE UPON A TIME . . ." The Camp will be held at The Hawthorn Center, 6175 Sunny Spring, Columbia, MD 21044. Full and half day options are available. Full day tuition is $250 (9 am - 5 pm). Half Day tuition is $150 (9 am - 1 pm). Students to bring bag lunch and 2 snacks(if full day and a snack if half day. Camp curriculum includes a unique combination of fun and creative theatre and speech activities, such as mini-plays, silent scenes, dialogue development, partner performances and theatre games. The camp will feature the play "Fancy That" - specifically written for Drama Kids International.
